The rear-facing windows of the property benefit from a bucolic view uphill towards the Miradouro de Nossa Senhora da Conceição (viewpoint); and a short way up this hill, sits a raised stone terrace (old Eira) with stunning views, the perfect spot for a yoga session.

Often known as the “Blue Island,” Faial is famous for the hydrangeas that line its roads throughout spring and summer. The island has a relaxed and safe atmosphere year-round, becoming more vibrant between May and October when sailing boats and luxury yachts arrive at the legendary Horta Marina during the Atlantic sailing season.

Faial is also one of the best islands in the Azores for outdoor adventure. Guests can hike around the dramatic Caldeira do Faial crater, explore the extraordinary volcanic landscape of Capelinhos Volcano, relax on the island’s striking black-sand beaches with crystal-clear waters, or experience some unforgettable whale watching. Scrimshaw House is located just minutes from Horta’s marina and city centre, where you can visit the Scrimshaw (traditional art of carving whale bone) and Whaling Museums. Ocean lovers visiting the Azores will find Faial an excellent base for whale watching, and private boat trips can also be arranged to secluded swimming spots along the island’s coastline.

A regular ferry service connects Faial with neighbouring Pico Island, home to Portugal’s highest mountain and UNESCO-listed vineyards, making Scrimshaw House an excellent base for Azores Island hopping or a memorable two-centre holiday.

WARNING NOTES: Children under the age of 5 are not accepted; all children must nevertheless be supervised when using the jacuzzi and sauna, as well as around the grounds, as there are several unprotected drops.

  • Rental balance due 6 weeks prior to start date of rental, not refundable after this date
  • Security deposit of 20% to be paid in advance of rental - this amount minus any applicable charges is refundable at the end of the holiday
