Lisbon is contemporary and buzzing, with an insatiable appetite for food, music, nightlife and culture. Its spectacular blend of modern architecture and ancient buildings, quaint and charming cobble-stone quarters and its famous clanking trams, make it a great city for sigh-seeing.

Once a quaint old fishing port, Cascais and its neighbour Estoril on the Portuguese Riviera, are now glamorous resorts with a wide range of restaurants, shops and a world-class marina located 30 minutes from Lisbon.  Estoril was a renowned den of spies during World War II and the playground of many exiled royal families; the romance and glamour of those by-gone days still clinging to its old buildings.

There are many fairy-tale palaces, gothic monasteries, medieval castles and classified UNESCO World Heritage Sites to explore around the capital including Sintra, Mafra, Óbidos, Alcobaça, Batalha and Tomar. And despite its world-famous reputation of the largest ever surfed waves, Nazare on the coast still has a distinct “fisherman village” character, with its beach docked boats and lines of drying fish.

A relatively fresh maritime climate also allows for some wonderful table wines to be produced in the region - vines have been grown north and south of the Tagus River since Roman times.
