PICO ISLAND, AZORES

"A range of charming cottages built as a village cluster with excellent amenities and enjoying superb views, in a calm and tranquil setting on the north coast of Pico Island."

In a privileged setting with views towards the ocean and the top of Pico mountain (a dormant volcano), this village of modern self-catering cottages is built as a cluster around and a heated swimming pool with infinity views, shared grounds and a restaurant. The cottages range from one to 3 bedrooms units and are ideal for a couple or a small family but could also be booked together for larger group stays.

The charming Pico Cottages have been recuperated from ruins and converted into cosy and contemporary accommodation with local stone and wood features, as well as polished cement interiors and floor to ceiling sliding glass doors inviting the outdoors in. The highlight of each cottage is the private balcony, perfect for sunset drinks and enjoying the unsurpassed views. They are suitable for year-round rentals, and well equipped with all essential mod-cons including WIFI.

The surrounding natural beauty and tranquillity of the Pico Cottages make them a perfect escape for those wanting to experience some of the Azores cultural heritage; whilst Pico Island offers a special kind of exquisiteness and is known for its hospitality and welcoming atmosphere. Once upon a time, the northern shores of the island hosted one the archipelagos’ main shipyards. Today, the local village has a regional handicraft school and exhibition centre showcasing Pico’s rural and maritime life and traditions. And scattered around the island, you can experience some stunning walking trails and natural pools to swim in.

Back at the Pico Cottages, book yourself a massage and join a Yoga class (several times a week) hosted in a panoramic room. This multi-functional room can also be rented for small events. As well as offering some island souvenirs, the small grocery/gift shop stocks a range of products allowing you to prepare a meal in your rented cottage, or you may prefer to enjoy the local culinary delights prepared by the restaurant (take away or eat in).

Exploring Pico island: This small island (44 kms long and 16 kms wide) nonetheless offers plenty to explore and do including dolphin/whale watching, around the island boat trips, nature walks & picnics, climbing up to the Pico volcano, swimming in natural lava pools, visiting the UNESCO-designated historical vineyards & wine tasting (verdelho), or visiting the whale museum & the regional handicraft school.

Exploring other islands: Whilst staying in Pico you might be tempted to explore other islands and both Faial and São Jorge are relatively easy to get to. There are regular boat trips from the village of Madalena in Pico to Faial (30 minutes) and from São Roque or Madalena to São Jorge (1 hour). For exploring tips check out www.visitazores.com.

Airport, 40 kms: Azores Airlines Sata has regular flights from Lisbon to Pico Island, from Lisbon to Faial + a boat trip connection (30 minutes), or via São Miguel or Terceira islands with a free extension to Pico.
