A quintessential Portuguese Quinta featuring 3 modernized and well-equipped rental cottages, sharing a swimming pool and tranquil estate grounds, near the south-west coast of Portugal.

Quinta da Donalda on the Western Algarve has been owned by the same family for over 360 years and offers a perfect blend of a classic Quinta style and modern-day essentials for relaxing self-catering holidays. The property is well suited for large families or groups of friends up to 18 wanting to holiday together yet retain some independence but outside the high season, the cottages can be rented separately for smaller parties of 2/4 or 10 guests.

Dating back to the 1600s and described as “a farm surrounded by vines, fig trees and bread making land”, Quinta da Donalda sits within 92 hectares of land and is still a working estate today. The vines have since gone but other farm products can be bought in Portimão Municipal Market. In 1944 a small chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição was built and in 2014, a large fire destroyed the main Quinta building, which is still being renovated. Past guests have included the Portuguese Royal Family (Braganza), the Crown Prince of Liechtenstein and the Counts of Paris (D’Orleans) as well as several Portuguese presidents and politicians.

The Liberal Wing (alluding to Reformists family members during Portugal’s royal past and civil wars) is attached to the main Quinta building and includes en-suite 5 bedroom suites all on one floor (1 is suitable for disabled person/wheelchair users), opening onto an orange tree courtyard for breakfast and outdoor meals. The Bartolomeu & Daniel cottages (charmingly named after previous workers who once worked at Quinta da Donalda) have been converted from old farm buildings. They mirror each other and accommodate 2/4 guests each, featuring a mezzanine level with an open plan ground floor. All properties have their own fully equipped kitchen and are fitted with fireplaces and air conditioning for year-round rentals.

Resident staff provide breakfast daily and can prepare other meals on request.

This is a quiet and calm setting away from the hustle bustle of the coast, allowing you to fully relax with a book by the pool with its lawn surround or take a walk through the estate. You can also go horse riding or play a round of golf nearby and the closest beach (Alvor), is only a 10-minute drive away.

WARNING NOTES: Family rentals with children under 8 years of age are accepted only with full rental of all 3 cottages at the Quinta. This is a working country estate where machinery and farming products abound, and young children must be supervised.

  • All on one level, the Liberal Wing has a maximum capacity of 10 guests:  Entrance hall. Twin/double bedroom (2 beds of 90cm x 200cm) with en-suite shower bathroom. Double bedroom (bed of 200cm x140cm) with en-suite shower bathroom, suitable for a disabled person/wheelchair user. The large suite comprises of a twin/double bedroom (2 beds of 90cmx200cm) with a small sitting room with sofa bed and a full bathroom and is ideal for a couple with children. Central open plan sitting/dining room opening onto the orange tree courtyard. Kitchen with fridge freezer, 4-point electric hob and oven, microwave and dishwasher. Twin/double bedroom (2 beds of 90cm x 200cm) with en-suite full bathroom. Double bedroom (bed of 200cm x 160cm) with en suite shower bathroom (direct access to exterior).
  • On two levels, the Daniel & Bartolomeu Cottages have maximum capacity 2/4 guests each: GROUND FLOOR with open-plan sitting & dining room with 2 single sofa beds, kitchenette with small fridge, 2-point electric hob and oven, plus microwave. Rear access and shower bathroom. FIRST FLOOR/MEZZANINE LEVEL with twin/double bedroom (2 beds of x 90cm x 200cm) with en-suite shower bathroom.
  • Bedroom & bathroom linen provided for the requisite number of guests changed every 4 days
  • One suite in the Liberal Wing is suitable for disabled persons/wheelchair users
  • All twin bedrooms can be made up as double bedrooms
  • Cot & High Chair (for exclusive rentals only) on request
  • Hairdryers provided in all bedrooms

  • Surround system music system and CD player in Liberal wing only
  • All properties with free WiFi available throughout
  • Outhouse laundry facilities but each property equipped with ironing board & iron

  • Fenced-in swimming pool w/roman steps (size 12,5×8 meters, shallow-end 0,80 meters, deep-end 1,60 meters); outdoor shower; poolside shade & sun loungers available; pool towels x 1 p/guest p/week provided
  • Resident staff live in a self-contained cottage within the Quinta: daily housekeeping, plus garden & pool maintenance as required
  • Continental style breakfast served every day between 9:00-11:00 Hours (fresh bread, homemade cakes and cookies, seasonal fruit, bread, eggs (by request), yogurt, butter, ham, cheese, homemade jam, honey, tea, coffee, milk, orange juice) + other basics included in the rental (toilet paper, shower gel, hand soaps, dishwashing liquid or machine products, salt, pepper, vinegar  & olive oil)
  • Cook service, paid locally – 3 courses @ €30 p/adult & €15 p/child (3-12 years of age) p/meal; beverages not included
  • Picnic basket, paid locally
  • Personal laundry, paid locally
  • Weddings/events of 50 guests maximum accepted only outside the peak season only and all properties on the estate must be booked together; extra wedding/event fee of €2,000 + security deposit of €2,000 applies; wedding/event planner & full event insurance at clients cost
  • Beaches: Praia de Alvor, 8 kms; Meia Praia in Lagos, 16 kms; Vila do Bispo (the gateway for west coast beaches), 45 kms
  • Golf: Penina, 4 kms away. Other golf courses located on the Western Algarve are the Alto Club, Silves, Alamos, Gramacho, Morgado do Reguengo, Oceanico, Palmares, Boavista, Espiche & Santo Antonio/Parque da Floresta
  • Portimão (major shops, municipal market, banks & hospital): 4-5 kms

  • Minimum stay of 1 week in high season & 4 nights other periods with flexible change over days
  • Check-in after 16:00 hours; check-out before 10:00 hours
  • Children under 8 years of age accepted only with full rental of all 3 cottages
  • No parties for more than full capacity, no pets & strictly no smoking indoors (penalty equal to security deposit)
  • Extra services are subject to availability and should be booked well in advance especially in high season; no credit cards accepted locally, only cash
  • Non-refundable rental deposit of 30% required to reserve the property
  • Special “Covid19 Pandemic” flexi terms up to 9 weeks before the start of the rental date – option of changing to alternative dates up to the end of 2021, free of charge and subject to availability; although we recommend that you also be covered by Covid 19 related insurance similar to https://www.portugaltravelinsurance.com
  • Rental balance due 6 weeks prior to start date of rental
  • Security deposit of €200 for each cottage or €500 for the whole property to be paid in advance of rental; in exceptional cases & when pre-arranged, the security deposit can be paid at the property – this amount minus any applicable charges is refundable at the end of the holiday
